Oxygen-Depolarized Cathode Process Electrolyzer (NaCl-ODC)

A Quantum Leap in Sustainable Chlor-Alkali Electrolysis

Developed together with Covestro, the NaCl-ODC process reduces power consumption by up to 25% compared to conventional membrane technology. This is especially beneficial in countries with expensive electricity. NaCl-ODC electrolysis is based on oxygen-depolarized cathodes integrated into the BM single-element electrolysis technology.

Suppressing Hydrogen Formation

Unlike conventional membrane cells, NaCl-ODC technology introduces oxygen into the cathode compartment. This suppresses hydrogen formation and significantly lowers energy demand. The result: lower electricity costs, reduced CO₂ footprint, and higher production flexibility.

Proven in Industrial Cooperation

With its basis in the well-established BM2.7 single-element design, NaCl-ODC technology combines proven reliability with groundbreaking efficiency. Plants can operate partly or fully with NaCl-ODC, or even combine NaCl-ODC and conventional membrane cells in one system – giving operators maximum flexibility in investment and operation.

Key Benefits of NaCl-ODC Electrolysis

  • Up to 25% energy savings compared to conventional membrane technology
  • Lower CO₂ emissions – significantly improved carbon footprint
  • Full compatibility with BM2.7 cells and brine cycle for flexible retrofits or hybrid plants
  • Reliable, proven design based on decades of single-element expertise
  • Greater site flexibility regarding electricity and hydrogen supply

NaCl-ODC Process Explained

At the heart of ODC technology lies its unique cathode structure: a woven metal mesh current distributor, catalyst, and binder. The current distributor acts as a support structure for the catalyst and the binder. The electrochemical reaction occurs in three steps:

  • Oxygen permeates the porous ODC structure.
  • It dissolves in the caustic electrolyte and diffuses to the catalyst surface.
  • Oxygen is then chemically reduced and the reaction products are removed by convective transport.
